Introduction to the Qualification


What is this qualification?

These qualifications are Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ). They involve the skills and knowledge needed for occupations in Fabrication and Welding Engineering including the, ability to organise work and identify and prevent problems. SVQs are based on national occupational standards, which the candidate must meet to be competent in a particular task. The achievement of SVQs will encourage an employee to value their contribution to the workplace, and it will develop their skills and potential within the Fabrication and Welding Engineering field. 

Who are these qualifications for?

  • Individuals who need recognition of their competence in one or more of a wide variety of Fabrication and Welding Engineering activities and also need a nationally recognised qualification at SVQ level three
  • Candidates who are undertaking a SEMTA modern apprenticeship
  • Those who are working in a Fabrication and Welding Engineering environment and would like to work towards a relevant SVQ Level 3 qualification.
  • Those who are new to Fabrication and Welding Engineering but are looking for a career change and wish to develop new skills within the industry.


What do these qualifications cover?


The skills and knowledge in one or more of a wide variety of Fabrication and Welding Engineering activities including:

  • Manual welding
  • Welding machine setting and operating
  • Sheet metalworking (3 mm or less)
  • Plateworking (3 mm upwards)
  • Structural steelwork
  • Pipe and tube fabrication
  • Composite fabrication


Accreditation & Industry Support for this Qualification

These qualifications:

  • Are accredited by SQA as level 3 SVQ
  • Are supported by SEMTA
  • Developed with industry support


Achievement of the Qualification & ‘Stand Alone Units’

This qualification is gained when all the necessary units have been achieved. The centre will then be able to apply for your SVQ. You will also receive a Certificate of Unit Credit, listing all the units you have achieved.

However if you don’t manage to complete the full qualification you can still claim a Certificate of Unit Credit for the units achieved therefore, you still have proof of your ability and could complete the qualification at a later date.


Units can also be taken individually (standalone). This manual must be used in conjunction with the delivery and assessment of any individual units to ensure that assessment requirements and methodologies are consistently applied.

This qualification relates to the following:

  • EAL Level 2 SVQ in Engineering Maintenance and Installation,
  • EAL Level 2 SVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
  • EAL Level 3 SVQ in Engineering Maintenance,
  • EAL Level 3 SVQ in Engineering Installation and Commissioning
  • EAL Level 3 SVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
